I'm not Black, and I would never pretend to know what racism feels like on an individual level. However, -like everyone else- I have seen the abhorrent effects of racism on individuals, community, and society. To say the song "Brown Sugar" is somehow emblematic of racism in this country and throughout the world seems misguided. I've always thought of the song as great satire made all the more potent by it's popularity. Plus, I mean, come on- it's a killer tune.

Who *actually* admits to racism anyway? I'm sure some of your "best friends are black" and you think it gives you the right to talk on and on about whipping them past midnight etc but that is no excuse to do so. He "shows the racism and misogyny in rock&roll"? By what?? He doesn't just say brown, it's that he says whipping and raping slaves "tastes so good", smiles about and dances. um Hello! "whoops!" "oh but it's ok he cites black artists"-- no, it is NOT ok. Enough with the excuses!

Uhhh...Mick Jagger is not a racist. He and the rest of the band are more than aware of their debt to black musicians and have done more than most artists in recognizing their roots. (see Buddy Guy, Solomon Burke, Hubert Sumlin, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, BB King, Chuck Berry, etc...)The lyrics to Brown Sugar are intentionally over the top, bordering on hyperbolic. They are meant to show the racism and misogyny inherent in Rock and Roll. Also, they're really catchy.
