no this song is about a suicide bomber. there was an interview done i think and it was stated either by bruce himself or a producer that this is really abouta sucide bomber. just listen and ull get it

This whole album is about 911, this song is about a man who lost his kid. This being 9/11 08 I've been listening to the album all day. I've read that for each of these songs Springsteen interviewed survivors, this one is the hardest to listen to so sad but so beautiful too.

I think the song can be about a lot of things. I always thought it was about a man mourning his wife who died in 9/11. But I read that Bruce wrote it about a suicide bomber "in the crowded market place," "I hold my breath and close my eyes and wait for paradise." It is a beautiful song though, whatever it means to you.

I think the verse about the schoolbooks and the ribbons in her hair suggests a little girl.

So did I, but Bruce himself has said its about a suicide bomber.

actually, the song is about someone who's beloved died somehow or another, they believe that by killing themself they'll join their loved one in heaven. But then just as they are about to die, they realize that they might not be able to join them. Upon coming to this conclusion they decide against suicide.
