Guys, I'm sorry to rain on your parade but this song is about Cthulhu, an ancient alien horror, as described in HP Lovecraft's tales. The words "Not dead which eternal lies, strange aeons death may die" were adapted from the short story "The Call of Cthulhu" by Lovecraft. You can find the exact words on Iron Maiden's Live After Death album cover, on the tombstone.

metalhead1648: The song has multiple meanings like every song, but I take it in this way: We live in madness because of evil in our world. He says "In madness we dwell" because we live in an evil world. The message is to "Face the Thing that should not be". Stand up against evil. My favorite Metallica song I think.

Lyrics:
Messenger of fear in sight
Dark deception kills the light

Hybrid children watch the sea
Pray for Father, roaming free

Fearless wretch insanity
He watches lurking beneath the sea
Great old one forbidden site
He searches, hunter of the shadows is rising
Immortal in madness you dwell

Crawling chaos, underground
Cult has summoned, twisted sound

Out from ruins once possessed
Fallen city, living death

Fearless wretch, insanity
He watches lurking beneath the sea
Timeless sleep has been upset
He awakens, hunter of the shadows is rising
Immortal in madness you dwell

In madness you dwell

Not dead, which eternal lie
Stranger eons death may die

Drain you off your sanity
Face the thing that should not be

Fearless wretch, insanity
He watches lurking beneath the sea
Great old one forbidden site
He searches, hunter of the shadows is rising
Immortal in madness you dwell
