The way I understand it (this is just my opinion), it just seems that the old guy is finally asking himself these questions before, during and after his wife passed away, and the questions that he asked himself but never answered until the end...I don't know if that's right or not, but I hope it gives you a little more understanding. :)

Yes, i understand the lyrics. I didn't understand the relationship between the lyrics and the video.

Simply put, it's just saying "what if?". You see everything as it is, but have you ever wondered "what if" it was different? What if you chose one thing over the other? How would that change how you are or what's around you? It's just something to think about, not exactly understand.

this song is called "what if". just buy the album and check, you'll see : it's the track 2 (what if). x&y is an other song, on this album which is called the same way (x&y)

The clips with the guy on piano seem like they could fit in an actual Coldplay music video. I think this was a pretty ingenious music video.

This video, coupled with the song, made me realize how fragile life and all the players in it are. It helps me appreciate the greatness in life.

Lyrics:
What if there was no light?
Nothin' wrong, nothin' right
What if there was no time
And no reason or rhyme?

What if you should decide
That you don't want me there by your side
That you don't want me there in your life?

What if I got it wrong?
And no poem or song
Could put right what I got wrong
Or make you feel I belong

What if you should decide
That you don't want me there by your side
That you don't want me there in your life?

Ooh, that's right
Let's take a breath, jump over the side
Ooh, that's right
How can you know it if you don't even try?
Ooh, that's right

Every step that you take
Could be your biggest mistake
It could bend or it could break
But that's the risk that you take

What if you should decide
That you don't want me there in your life
That you don't want me there by your side?

Ooh, that's right
Let's take a breath, jump over the side
Ooh, that's right
How can you know it when you don't even try?
Ooh, that's right

Ooh, that's right
Let's take a breath, jump over the side
Ooh, that's right
You know that darkness always turns into light
Ooh, that's right
