Long time Bowie fan here. I caught his tours in the 70s so I'm no johnny-come-lately to his music or concerts. This whole "Hey I'm just a guy rapping to my audience like they are my friends" schtik is very practiced and artfully executed though it is not authentic. Its like what he did with Tin Machine with the "I'm just one of the boys in the band" thing. No one bought that except for maybe some dilletantes. On the other hand I've been used to this act for decades as is any longtime Bowie fan.

I hear ya... I have been a Bowie fan for only 7 years, but it is easy to see that David is very stylized. Saying that, I do not think he would be able to pull this 'performance' off in the 70's or 80's. It is all a part of the performing act, but he had to arrive there. It is obvious he is, let's call it -- 'more settled' than before and more mature, more content, just happier...

Right. Around 77 I had a discussion with a Bowie fan and we concluded that eventually he would cycle through any number of characters before arriving at a more approachable persona but that ,too, would be a character. After all its a theme he has had since day one. It is also one of the reasons that I've been an avid follower since so many other singers peak early in life and basically stagnate.

so true bowiemott i wish the new bowie fans would realise bowie as been bowie for solong . he is product we all but into,,,david jones is just a man who owns the rights to david bowie and a human who as been a great musical influence . but at the end of the day ,he satisfies himself ,and if we like his music and buy it,thats a musical and finacial bonus for him

I find the ongoing discussion from Bowie-fans, especially some older ones, if David Bowie is authentic or not and if he is stylized or not so boring! He had so many changes of character in his career - why shouldn't he present himself in a different way today? He'll never stop changing.
